• Faith comes from hearing from the word of the lord. (Romans 10:17)

Biblical Essentials

The essentials of faith outlined in Cornerstone Church’s Statement of Faith encapsulate what we consider essential biblical teachings. It is expected that those who partner with Cornerstone affirm and believe these doctrines. As a church, we strive to uphold these clear teachings while realizing there is interpretative freedom among believers in areas where scripture is less explicit.

  • Revelation:

We believe that God has revealed Himself through general revelation evident in creation (Romans 1:18–20, Psalm 19:1–6, Job 12:7–9), and through the human conscience which reflects the Law of God (Romans 2:14–15). However, Scripture provides a special revelation distinct from general revelation. Even in Eden, general revelation was insufficient, as man required God's continual guidance to understand His will. General revelation lacks redemptive content, while the Scriptures testify of Christ and must be searched to find Him. According to John 14:26 and 16:13, the New Testament was written under the Holy Spirit's authority. Therefore, we must rely on Scripture for understanding the special revelation of Jesus Christ, through whom our redemption is found. (Mark 13:31, Luke 16:17, Psalm 112:7)

    Inspiration:

We believe in the inspiration of the Scriptures as stated in 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.” The term “inspired,” translated from the Greek word theopneustos, meaning “God-breathed,” indicates that God is the author of Scripture. The Scriptures are not a product of collaboration between God and man, nor of God working within a man. They are the result of God speaking through man. Therefore, we believe that the Bible, in its entirety, is without error in the original manuscripts and is supernaturally preserved for the believer today. (1 Peter 1:23, Psalm 12:6-7, Matthew 24:35)

  • We believe in one God who exists eternally as three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each person is fully, equally, and eternally God, sharing the same divine nature and attributes, and deserving of the same worship and honor (Matt. 28:18-20).

We believe God the Father is the Creator of heaven and earth. God the Son, eternally begotten but not made, became fully human for our salvation (John 1:14; Heb. 1:3). He created all things, sustains them, and will return for the final judgment (Col. 1:15-20). The Holy Spirit, proceeding from the Father and the Son, gives new life, illuminates the word of God, unites believers with Christ, gives gifts to the church through Himself, and dwells within them (John 15:26-27; Eph. 1:13-14). The Holy Spirit glorifies the Son, who glorifies the Father and leads the Church in understanding God's Word. The Holy Spirit is to be honored and worshiped as God, the third person of the Trinity.

  • We believe that the Holy Spirit is a gift to all believers upon their repentance and confession that Jesus Christ is Lord (Acts 2:38-39). Also as attested in Acts in Acts 2:15-18, the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence empowers believers, guiding them in truth (John 16:13), convicting them of sin (John 16:8-11), and equipping them for spiritual growth and service (1 Cor. 6:11, Gal. 5:22-23). This divine presence serves as a constant source of comfort, guidance, and strength throughout the Christian journey. The gifts bestowed upon believers by the Grace of God are indispensable for nurturing and sustaining a vibrant, flourishing Christian life.

  • THE NATURE OF SIN

Sin is any failure to conform to God's character, whether in action, disposition, or state. It is contrary to God's holiness and is ultimately rebellion against Him. Scripture reveals to the individual and defines sin, as illustrated in Romans 7:7b: “I would not have come to know sin except through the Law.”

    THE EFFECTS OF SIN

God, in His holiness, must punish sin, leading to relational and eternal separation from Him (Exodus 34:7, Revelation 20:13-15). God's purity cannot tolerate evil (Habakkuk 1:13), so no one in their sinful nature can stand before Him (Exodus 33:20). Sin is any deviation from God’s will and character practicing lawlessness (1 John 3:4). This can be in the sin of omission and commission. The sin of omission is not doing what you are supposed to do while the sin of commission is doing what you are not supposed to do. All sin leads to death and can only be overcome by Jesus (Romans 6:23).

THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF ORIGINAL SIN

All humanity inherits a corrupted nature from Adam, known as Original Sin. Everyone is a sinner by nature and choice (Psalm 14:1-3, Romans 3:23). While believers’ sinful nature was crucified with Christ (Romans 6:10), the struggle with sin persists. This corruption affects will (Romans 1:28), conscience (1 Timothy 4:2), and intellect (2 Corinthians 4:4), blinding hearts and understanding (Ephesians 4:18).

  • We affirm that salvation is a gracious gift bestowed by God and is obtained by individuals through personal faith in Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice for sin. We maintain that justification comes by grace alone, through faith alone, apart from any human works (Acts 13:38-39; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 1:4-5; 2:8-10, Acts 16:31).

We firmly assert that salvation is exclusively found in Jesus Christ and that no one can be saved except through a deliberate and personal decision to place trust in Christ as their sole Savior (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 10:9-10).

Moreover, we affirm the eternal security of believers, emphasizing that all who are chosen by God and truly believe in Christ are eternally secure in Him (Romans 8:1, 29-30, 38-39; John 10:27-30). This security rests not on our merit or ability, but on the unchanging faithfulness of God to His covenant promises.

  • We believe the Church is the body of Christ, created by God's Word and Spirit to shine forth His glory and call sinful humanity into fellowship with Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-31). The Church, composed of genuine followers of Jesus, exists to worship and glorify God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Its ministry extends the work of Jesus through the power of the Spirit.

The Church's ultimate mission is to glorify God by making disciples (Matt. 28:18-20). This is achieved through worship, prayer, teaching, observance of ordinances, fellowship, using spiritual gifts, and proclaiming the gospel locally and globally.

  • We believe that Jesus Christ will return to the world in the future to judge both the living and the dead.

The consummation of all things involves the future, physical, visible, personal, and glorious return of Jesus Christ. This momentous event will include the resurrection of the dead, the catching up of the saints, and the glorification of those who are alive in Christ (1 Thes 4:17). At His return, Christ will judge the just and the unjust, bringing about the fulfillment of His kingdom in the new heavens and the new earth.

In this consummation, Satan, along with his hosts and all those who are not in Christ, will be eternally separated from the benevolent presence of God and will endure eternal punishment (Revelation 20:7-15). Conversely, the righteous, in their glorified bodies, will live and reign with Christ forever. They will serve Him and give Him unending praise and glory.

This ultimate fulfillment will see the eager expectation of creation realized, as the whole earth will proclaim the glory of God, who makes all things new (Revelation 21:1-5). The new heavens and new earth will be a place of perfect harmony and righteousness, where God's sovereign rule is fully manifested, and His people experience the fullness of His presence and blessing for eternity.

  • We recognize two ordinances: the believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Believer’s submersion baptism, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is for those who have received Christ and symbolizes their union with Him in His death and resurrection. The Lord’s Supper, observed by believers, symbolizes Christ’s broken body and shed blood, reminding us of His sacrifice and providing spiritual nourishment and unity.

  • We hold that the term "marriage" has a singular definition: a union sanctified by God, joining one man and one woman in an exclusive, lifelong covenant, as outlined in the Bible ("Biblical Marriage"). As God, our Creator, established marriage as a sacred institution between one man and one woman, this has been the consistent Biblical definition of marriage throughout human history. According to our belief, Biblical Marriage is the only form of marriage recognized and accepted by God. (Genesis 2:22-24, Matthew 19:4-6, 1 Timothy 3:12, Ephesians 5:22-28)

  • We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as biologically male or female. These two distinct, complementary sexes and their corresponding genders together reflect the image and nature of God. Rejecting one's biological sex is viewed as a rejection of the divine image within that person. (Genesis 1:26-27, Psalm 139:13-16)
